Internet Applications
These days, everyone needs a browser and most times a mail client too. Fortunately, there are plenty of free choices available that are quite excellent. Below you'll find an excellent collection of free Internet applications that belong on all computers.
Mozilla Firefox is an outstanding browser and have replaced Internet Explorer for me in all but some very limited browsing needs (like Terminal Server). It has a very small footprint, can run in a portable edition, is very stable, and has a ton of features and extensions for it. It's no wonder that Firefox has quietly been gaining ground on IE's hold on the browser market. Use it and take control of your web browsing!
PortableApps.com has packaged Firefox into a portable app so you can run everything from one folder. A portable app runs everything from 1 folder, making it easy to take with you on a USB drive or to test drive a new piece of software. Take your bookmarks, passwords, and anything else with you when you surf. Uninstalling is just a matter of deleting the entire application folder, leaving nothing behind.
An excellent email client, Thunderbird does everything you would expect an email client to do. You can have multiple accounts going to different folders, create subfolders and organize your mail with ease. Thunderbird 2 features advance searching, enhanced security, and easy access to popular web mail services such as Gmail and .Mac. Please note the different version between the portable and installed editions.

One of the best FTP clients I've ever used. FileZilla is fast and reliable, with plenty of features. It supports resume on both downloads and uploads, timeout detection, firewall support, SOCKS4/5 and HTTP1.1 support, SSL, SFTP and more, all with an intuitive drag and drop interface. An open source project, you can improve FileZilla yourself if you're so inclinced.

Miranda IM is an awesome Instant Message program that's completely free. It's an open source alternative to popular IM clients and is compatible with AIM, Jabber, ICQ, IRC, MSN, Yahoo, and many more. There are plenty of plugins available for it to extend its functionalities but out of the package it does everything you need out of an instant messaging client and then some.
